The Toll of Becoming an Author

Do you know how much it actually takes to write a novel? It’s shocking how much goes into it. Even after writing a few, if I look too far ahead, I struggle to stay motivated. That’s because writing—especially novels—requires focus on the little things. It starts with a word, then a line, then a page, and eventually grows the more you care for it.

Daily work—that’s what it takes. And I think it’s important not to overlook that. I don’t know how it is for big-time authors who’ve reached a level of success that supports them financially, but for those just starting out, you can’t make writing your number one priority.

In my case, even though I’m blessed with support on all sides, I’m lucky to get in an hour or two each day. I fervently wish I could quit my job and focus on my books, but that’s simply not a real option right now.

I have a small family to think of. That means making the house payment, taking care of utilities, cooking meals, going on walks, and caring for everyone—including myself. And maybe that’s why writing feels like a struggle. Could I conceivably quit my job and spend my days writing? Probably. But the cost would be too great for what I’d gain.

No, my path isn’t so simple—or so foolish—as to abandon every other aspect of my life. My pursuit is messy, confusing, and exhausting. It’s that focus on the small things: a page edited today, another chapter drafted tomorrow. Some days I miss entirely.

And you know what? That’s okay. As far as I’m aware, you don’t get to be a successful author without paying the toll first. It might take years, even decades. But I’m convinced my daily work will pay off. One day, writing will be my job. I don’t know what that means for my teaching career, but I like to think it will become my side gig.

That’s why I write a daily blog. Not because the posts are amazing or life-altering, but because they warm me up and help me grow. In other words, these blogs are the small, daily part of my journey. No matter how difficult things get, I force myself to write something.

I am an author. And though the world might not know it yet, writing is what I do.
