Long · 148 words

Robert Cade Thompson teaches middle school English in South Carolina and writes the books his students read — they get his manuscripts before anyone else does, and they tell him which parts are boring.

He is the author of the Echo Island series, a five-book young adult fantasy built on Celtic folklore and invented botany, and Subterrania, the first of a science fiction trilogy set seven hundred years after humanity fled underground. He founded and runs a thirty-member robotics club that pays him nothing, and holds a BA in creative writing from Utah Tech.

The plants in his books are not an accident. He spends his free time in swamps, woods and wild places with a camera, filming the things most people walk past — then he puts them in a novel and gives them a name. A naturalist who writes worlds.

He publishes under Fox Clan Publishing and lives in Florence, South Carolina.

Prefer a different angle — the teaching, the fieldwork, the self-publishing? Ask and I will write one for your piece.

Echo Island: The Clan Games

Book one of five · YA fantasy · out now

A masked thief hands fifteen-year-old Calum O’Brian a wooden box and tells him not to open it.

The Ten Clans are descended from people who fled Earth three hundred years ago, and they have spent every year since deliberately holding their own progress back. Nobody crosses the Great Wall. When Calum opens the box he finds an invitation from a people who are not human, and a technology that is botany rather than magic. Celtic folklore, invented plants that obey their own rules, and a Games nobody survives politely.

Echo Island: Fall of the Ten Clans

Book two of five · YA fantasy · 6 October 2026

Four clans have fallen and declared themselves a new nation, and Calum has nothing left but a page of notes in his own handwriting.

Calum O’Brian has buried his father and lost the artifact that was going to show him the way. A rebel who was never entirely wrong gives the new nation a name. And on the far side of the Great Wall, in a forest nobody has crossed on purpose in three hundred years, something has been waiting the whole time.

Book one of three · YA science fiction · out now

Quin is sixteen, lives a mile underground, and cannot stop going into the tunnels she was told to stay out of.

Humanity fled underground seven hundred years ago. A covert order of Engineers recruits Quin for exactly the flaw everyone else has been trying to train out of her, and within a month she has lost an arm, gained an illegal AI, and learned that everything her people believe about the enemy is a lie. Darker than Echo Island — this one is for older readers.

Interview angles that are actually different

The classroom
A teacher whose own students workshop his unpublished manuscripts, chapter by chapter, and tell him what is boring. The middle-grade novel in progress started as a decommissioned bathroom in the back corner of his classroom that he named the closet of doom.
The method
Invented botany that has to obey real rules. He films wild places, then builds the species that do not exist and makes them behave like the ones that do.
The robotics club
Founded it, runs it, thirty members, paid nothing for any of it.
Self-published
Every title, including the audiobook. Happy to talk about what that actually costs and what it actually returns, with numbers.
